Steel contamination kit

August 2014 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Thermo Scientific’s portable RadEye steel contamination kit provides a solution for steel sample monitoring. It enables the high performance handheld Gamma Personal Radiation Detector RadEye PRD-S to become a fast and reliable detector of radioactivity in metal samples, for example, Co-60 contamination in steel samples (lollies).

The combination of the RadEye steel contamination kit and the RadEye PRD-S allows lollies to be quantitatively measured for very low levels of radioactivity, as the sample holder provides shielding from ambient radiation and an optimal counting geometry for the metal samples.

The software included easily allows adaption for different sample diameters (25 - 55 mm) or sample heights (maximum 54 mm) and the printout of an individual and detailed test certificate. Calibration factors for steel samples of different geometries are given through the software. Detection limits below 0,1 Bq/g for Co-60 are achievable, depending on sample dimensions. If required, the RadEye PRD-S can be removed from the sample changer and used as a highly sensitive gamma survey meter in order to detect homogeneous contamination in large objects and packages. In addition to the measurement of steel samples, dust and ash can be monitored, for example in Cs-137 contamination. For that purpose the kit is provided with jars and disposable gloves.

To get an operational steel contamination monitoring system, a RadEye steel contamination kit must be combined with a RadEye PRD-S. For the measurement, a steel sample in combination with the RadEye PRD-S is put into the shielding module. For optimal response, two steel samples can be placed around the RadEye PRD-S. Several adaptors for different sample sizes are provided. To perform QA checks on the system operation, an optional Thermo Scientific 9 g Lutetium Test-Adaptor can be used.
