Modular surge arrester with back-up fuse

September 2013 Electrical Power & Protection

DEHNguard M .... CI surge arresters have an integrated backup fuse which means they take up less space than conventional arresters. These modular surge arresters have a functional Red/Line design and combine short-circuit protection with surge protection in a single protection module. The integrated backup fuse avoids the need for arrester-specific dimensioning requirements such as backup protection in the event of a short circuit, as well as impulse current carrying capacity.

The user can implement space-saving surge protection measures in installations with short-circuit currents up to 25 kA rms, which covers all functions specified in installation standards. All circuits, including the N-PE circuit, feature an operating state indicator in accordance with the IEC 60364-5-53 standard.

The protective circuit with the arrester backup fuse integrated in the protection module, and the heavy-duty zinc oxide varistor, in combination with the dual thermodynamic control monitoring device, offer the advantage of easy installation and minimum space requirements. The thermodynamic control monitoring device not only evaluates the surface temperature of the heavy-duty varistor but also the intensity of the discharge current. The mechanical visual indication with green and red flags shows if every protective circuit is ready for operation, without the need for power. The visual indication indicates the activation of the monitoring device and the integrated arrester backup fuse.

Apart from the mechanical operating state/fault indication, the ...FM version of the arrester features a three-pole remote signalling terminal. With its floating changeover contact, the remote signal can be used as a break or make contact according to the particular circuit concept.

A module locking system prevents the protection modules from coming loose during transport due to shock or the enormous forces of discharge. The protection modules can be easily replaced without tools. To prevent incorrect insertion, every protective circuit of the multipole and single-pole SPD is mechanically coded.

The multipole modular DEHNguard M ... CI family features multifunctional terminals on a standardised spacing of one module for connecting conductors and busbars, allowing easy wiring with other DIN-rail mounted devices. Thus, a variety of applications can be connected in series in accordance with IEC 60364-5-53 for optimal protection.
