General manager, Ann de Beer thanking Trevor Salzwedel.

Instrotech recently delivered a technical presentation on load cell technology and applications at the SAIMC Johannesburg Technology Evening, presented by Trevor Salzwedel. The session gave attendees a practical overview of load cell operation, selection and installation, and emphasised their importance in industrial weighing and process control.

The presentation opened with the fundamentals of load cells, covering available technologies and the operating principles of strain gauge load cells. It also addressed the Wheatstone bridge circuit, strain measurement methods and how to interpret load cell output signals.

The training then covered common industrial load cell configurations including beam, compression and S-type load cells, with guidance on choosing the right option for specific applications. Much of the session focused on mechanical considerations, showing how vessel design, mounting arrangements, thermal expansion, vibration, piping stiffness and external forces can affect weighing accuracy and long-term reliability.

Practical examples and case studies illustrated common installation challenges and troubleshooting approaches, along with best-practice recommendations for installation and calibration. The presentation ended with an overview of available load cell indicators, transmitters and calibration solutions.

The SAIMC Johannesburg Branch thanks Instrotech and Trevor Salzwedel for hosting an informative evening. The strong engagement and many technical questions reflected the event’s success and the valuable insights gained by attendees.
