SAIMC News: Durban Branch
February 2002
SAIMC
Tuesday, 27 November, saw 11 members undertaking a very interesting visit. The trip started at the air force base at Durban International Airport where we were treated to a most interesting talk and discussion on vibration monitoring on the Oryx helicopter. The party then moved to the Weather Bureau offices where we were given an overview of their activities including weather balloons (and their instrumentation), weather forecasting and the official website at http://metsys.weathersa.co.za. The visit ended at the air traffic control centre, ATNS. Some fascinating insights into the operations of air traffic control were explained on operational equipment. Both the tower at Durban International Airport, as well as the approach and regional air traffic control facilities were visited.
A successful paperette evening was held on Tuesday, 4 December, where three students presented their Industrial Project work. For each of them, this was the final hurdle towards their B-Tech Degree. It is just a pity that there is not more support for this type of event, as it is a very proud time for the students involved.
