Formation of Standards Generating Body

October 2001 SAIMC

At a recent meeting of stakeholders, it was decided that a Standards Generating Body (SGB) for education and training in the field of measurement, control and instrumentation (MC&I) should be formed. Whilst not all industries were represented at this meeting an 'Interim committee' has been formed and Milli Khoza was nominated by his peers as the interim Chairperson.

The primary task will be to submit an application to the SA Qualifications Authority (SAQA) for approval of the SGB - a process that will ensure the representivity of the body.

SAQA has requested that commerce and industry should support the work of SGB's wherever possible and it is the intention to incorporate all the available standards that have already been generated in compliance with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Speaking after the initial meeting, Milli Khoza said, "Several major players have expressed concern recently, that while the institutions have continued to address the generic MC&I needs education and training in our field, there is great concern over specialist training and competency.

"The co-operation I see between representatives from the major users in this matter is encouraging and it will help us to implement a much-needed set of professional standards to complement those already in place for colleges, technikons and universities."

SAIMC Education and Training Chair, John Crossland added that this announcement could not have come at a better time. "Coming as it does, hot on the heals of the recent formation of the Engineering SGB, with Quality Assurance provided by the Engineering Council, commerce and industry in the MC&I field can at last look forward to a full range of competency standards, which collectively will address the needs of artisans, technicians, technologists and engineers."
