5 June Technology Evening – ifm electronic SA

The first June Technology Evening was held as usual at Umhambi lodge and was hosted by ifm electronic and presented by Conrad Du Plessis, product manager – AS-i, Octavis and R360 mobile control systems. The evening was well attended. Conrad started off by talking about the history of AS-i and what necessitated the need for it. He then went on to explain in detail how AS-i works and the evolution as well as differences in the versions.

Conrad explained where AS-i is positioned and stressed that AS-i has its own place, which is at the actuator/sensor level. He then explained some characteristics of AS-i such as length, topologies, the communication principle as well as the AS-i telegram and data transfer. To close off the presentation, Conrad introduced the new AS-i Master available on the market with a built- in PLC as well as the new power supplies.

The second Technology Evening for June was also hosted at Umhambi lodge, this time by Yokogawa and Johan van der Westhuizen, product specialist flow, pressure, temperature and wireless networks at Yokogawa South Africa. Johan introduced the various types of flow measurement available before going onto to show the calculations involved in flow measurement, which was a recap of some of the basic principles. He went on to dissect the formulae and explained the different components that influence flow measurement such as temperature and density. The calculations procedure was made with reference to volumetric/mass flow on the multivariable and correct installation of a DP transmitter. Johan also gave a brief overview on how calculations are done on the rotameter and the rotamass (Coriolis).

He finished off by showing standard calculation sheets from the sizing software and the various parameters needed to do a proper calculation/sizing for an application.
