At the June Technology Evening, Johannes Auret from Explolabs presented on the changes in the new ARP 0108 and its implications. The major principles of explosion prevention (including intrinsic safety) are well established by now. Apart from the comprehensive SANS 60079 series, we have the local SANS 10108 standard covering the classification of hazardous locations and the selection of apparatus for use in such locations.

ARP 0108 defines legal requirements for the certification of Ex equipment including instrumentation and complements technical documents, especially SANS 10108. All new re-designed or repaired Ex equipment requires IA certification, which is based on type testing and product quality assurance, where IA Certificates and test reports are not transferrable.
Johannes talked us through the implications of these changes, certification requirements, general repairs, repairs and certification of block boxes, markings, and change of ownership, intrinsically safe systems and totally new exclusions.
