Technology evening
The branch hosted its latest technology presentation at the Eskom marketing centre in Edgemead, where Rob Gillespie from I & E Systems in Australia gave a presentation titled 'System Information Modelling – SIM’.
Rob defined SIM as the process of designing, implementing and managing systems collaboratively using one coherent set of information instead of a collection of separate drawings, lists and files. He called it a paradigm shift. The conventional design process can involve arbitrary, repeated, unstructured information to produce a large amount of documentation. The SIM design process proposes coherent and structured information with a 1-to-1 relationship between the system and the model. Therefore, components and connections in the model and the system are directly related. This means component properties remain the same in different views. A change in the model propagates to all sub-views of the system. With SIM, only one model is created with many views, this is a significant shift from the traditional design process whereby:
* Each component is added to many documents, therefore each instance must be checked, and all documents cross-referenced.
* Connections link to different drawings, consequently extensive cross-referencing is needed.
All the problems above are avoided using SIM, as only one model is created. Rob mentioned that SIM based design can lead to cost savings of more than 50%. He also showed that SIM can be linked to Google Maps and 3D platforms. The SIM concept is readily applicable to control systems, instrumentation, telecommunication, power transmission, and distribution networks.

Cape Town survey winner
Earlier this year the branch conducted a membership survey in order to better understand expectations and to get feedback as to how the branch is being run. Participants stood a chance of winning a prize through a random draw and the branch congratulates winner, Maclean Mguti, who won himself a control valve handbook.
