Eric Carter (L) presents Max Koen with the SAIMC certificate of appreciation.

At the May Technology evening, Max Koen of Hazloc gave a presentation on the subject ‘Explosions due to poor worker knowledge’. According to Max, the major cause of explosions in hazardous areas is people with inadequate knowledge of the causes of explosions, the prevention techniques, how to install and maintain these, and how to work safely in this environment. There is a growing international trend to standardise the way in which people are trained to work in these areas which is spreading to South Africa, spearheaded by the international petrochemical companies. Max walked us through the problem areas and explained how properly structured training can increase plant safety through properly trained staff. Max mentioned legislation and standards, such as EC60079-14, IEC60079-10 and IEC60079-17, as well as the South Africa equivalent codes regarding hazardous areas and certification, training of personnel and the importance of competent people. He stressed the importance of a comprehensive understanding of selection, installation, inspection and maintenance requirements.

HazLoc provides consulting and training services to industry relating to how flammable gasses, vapours, liquids and also combustible dusts and fibres should be handled, stored and processed. The Johannesburg branch thanks Max for his informative presentation which was well received.
