There is an increasing demand for alternative energy in South Africa. At the last Technology Evening, Dieter Dilchert of Lapp Cables explained how renewable energy has become financially viable due to Eskom SOP and IDM programs. Return on investment is realised over a five to seven year period. The following topics were covered:
* Different types of mounting systems available.
* Weather stations and the importance of measuring the actual conditions as a point of reference against which to compare plant efficiency.
He talked about the various components in a solar installation and how each works, as well as the different cable and connection technologies involved. Dieter ended with a discussion about NET-Metering and the fact that it is possible in some cases to run the building meter backwards. There is currently no legislation governing it, but it is advisable to keep production below minimum consumption to avoid feeding into the grid.
