SAIMC

SAIMC: From the president's desk

November 2012 SAIMC

At the time of writing this there have been many things happening within the SAIMC. Jane from Technews spearheaded the recent article about the 55th anniversary of the SAIMC and the banquet planning is being finalised.

Membership benefits have moved to the top of the list of priorities this year and we are pleased to announce the following:

1. Just ahead of the festive season our members can now benefit from purchasing computer and other electronic devices directly from Esquire. Check out our website for more news. In order to make use of this opportunity you need to send a request to [email protected] and you will be supplied with a letter that you can take to Esquire in order to be registered.

2. Our Patron members can now benefit from sending their employees on formal golf training for a 33% discount – plus an instructor will accompany them on the first three holes on the golf course at the end of their training! Golf has been the unofficial business communication tool worldwide for many years now and we have now made it possible for our members and Patron members to be introduced to this game. What is great for our Patron members is that their staff need not even be members of the SAIMC to participate in this opportunity.

In order to make use of this opportunity please contact [email protected] and you will be put in contact with the operations manager at Golf for All. Although Golf for All is mainly active in Gauteng, it will assist us in other branches as well once it is known how many people are interested.

These offers are not time-unlimited so my recommendation is that you take us up on them while they still stand. We are working on more opportunities for our members and Patron members – watch this space!

Our numbers continue to grow and the SAIMC is truly becoming a force to be reckoned with. This is mainly due to the hard work of Council and the various branch committees. A huge thank you to all of you.

Our new website is coming along, thanks to the team under the leadership of Selvan Murugan; and our new constitution is very close to release for comments, thanks to the team under the leadership of John Owen-Ellis. Training received a lot of attention but we have not solved all the issues yet and this is clearly an area that needs a lot more dedicated thought. We have a shortage of mentors. We need people who are willing to share their knowledge on the industrial world and we need people who are willing to share their knowledge on the website and assist younger, less experienced professionals to solve issues faster and more effectively. Fortunately we have some good, professional trainers in instrumentation and we need to find ways to make use of their skills and knowledge optimally.

It is time to start thinking about who you would like to see on Council and on the various committees next year. The festive season plays havoc with schedules so do not wait too long before you make yourself available for duty as we are seeking people who have a heart for others and a passion to serve.
