SAIMC: Vaal branch

June 2012 SAIMC

This Vaal branch held a Technology Evening on 12 April. Refreshed by the Easter holidays, members turned out in numbers much to the pleasure of the chairman, who thought the turnout would have been affected by the cold spell gripping the region at the time.

The topic was partial stroke testing (PST) and our presenters were Roy Taljaard and Fred Venter from Valve and Automation. Fred gave a detailed presentation on PST, how it can be accomplished and why it is important. We learnt that it is especially important on safety valves and that, unlike normal control valves, these are sitting idle (open or closed) in the plant and may be defective or stuck and thus unavailable when they are required to operate. Aspects of functional safety were covered and how safety valves contribute toward achieving the required Safety Integrity Levels (SIL). Some new functionality and loop connection configurations were shown and it was clear that there is a continued drive for flexibility in application and to make these more ‘relevant’ in our processes. The presentation aroused much interest from the audience with a lot of questions being asked by the group. Roy rounded off the presentation with a practical demonstration of a partial stroking loop setup, simulating different failure modes and showing how a typical application interprets and alarms the faults.

For their informative presentation, Solly Mabitsela presented Fred and Roy with certificates of appreciation.
