The Durban branch May Technology Evening saw Robbie Frank, shareholder and managing director of Elemental Analytics, presenting on the topic ‘Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems’. The well received presentation was based around the philosophies of CEMS measurements; it included a brief overview of the legislation, current CEMS users and a look at extractive CEMS.

Forthcoming attractions

The July meeting will be held as usual at the Westville Country Club on the first Wednesday (4 July) of the month at 17:30 for 18:15. Gary Friend from Extech Safety Systems will be presenting on the topic ‘Cyber Security in a Modern Process Network’.

As Industrial Ethernet rolls out into process plants, security and connectivity to the business network has to be considered. Gary will examine the current scenario; look at the myths of network security and consider how control system security differs from IT security. He will examine firewall technology, the Bastion Model and ‘Defense in depth’ as a solution, finishing off with a look at where and what to protect.
