The Secunda branch held its third technology evening of 2012 at the WIKA offices in Trichardt on 10 May. Valve & Automation hosted the evening and focused on FDT/DTM technology as well as partial stroke testing of valves. Fred Venter discussed how FDT/DTM technology standardises the communication and configuration interface between field devices and host systems.

The history of the technology was presented and the advantages that it can bring to the customer were also highlighted. Fred went on to discuss the application of partial stroke testing for ESD valves which can remain in one position for extended periods of time. The technology allows the valve to be partially stroked as a manual operation or at set time intervals. An alarm is generated if the valve does not respond within a predetermined time. This allows failures to be identified before the valve is required to operate. The evening was well attended and the Secunda branch would like to thank Valve & Automation for hosting the evening.
