SAIMC: SAIMC introduces technical forums on social media site Linkedin

April 2012 SAIMC

The SAIMC was originally founded in 1957 as The Instrument and Control Society of Southern Africa and was registered in 1962 – the founding chairman was Claude Klepp. The name was subsequently changed to the South African Institute of Measurement and Control (SAIMC) to incorporate developments in the industry and the name was further changed in 2009 to The Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control to embody the international nature of the Society.

The vision of the organisation is: ‘To be the Society of choice, serving the needs of members and stakeholders in the development of the measurement and control industry’.

To achieve this, the SAIMC has 11 core missions covering various facets of the control and instrumentation industry. All missions have been designed to add value and enhance the professionalism and capabilities of C&I practitioners in the local industry and abroad.

The organisation has identified that two of these missions will form part of its new overall communication and know-ledge exchange strategy. These are:

* Providing a communication forum for the regular exchange of ideas, applications and technologies between members.

* Disseminating and communicating relevant information to the members and stakeholders in a controlled and co-ordinated manner.

The communication strategy focuses on the improvement of the website, increased communication to branch members in the form of newsletters and articles, as well as a new online presence on the professional networking site Linkedin.

Currently, the SAIMC Linkedin group has a total of 123 members and it has been decided to extend the work to provide a communication forum as well as disseminate relevant information to members. To do this, the following technical forums have been decided:

* Instrumentation.

* Scada systems.

* PLC systems.

* DCS systems.

* Industrial networks.

* Information systems.

* Project management.

* Systems engineering.

* Education and training.

The technical subgroups have been created for users to share opinions and technical information, as well as to discuss content relevant to the group. The groups are moderated by members of the SAIMC who will ensure that all content and activities comply with the vision, mission and code of ethics. The moderators will also be using these technical sub-groups to post new information as well as to discuss pressing and urgent topics within industry.

We welcome all members and non-members to join these sub-groups and start collaborating to ensure information exchange happens at a professional level.
