Compliance

The SAIMC is steadily growing and Patron membership has increased over the last few months. The compliance requirements have changed the way that many companies are doing business and the danger now exists that friendships will be exchanged for a cold blooded compliance template – regulated business. There are definitely advantages to this approach, but the danger is that this type of business fits bureaucrats like a glove. And everybody knows what disadvantages that can have on business.

Adhering to compliance guidelines does not mean that we throw our brains away and replace them with templates. It means that we have to be responsible for the efficient and effective implementation of compliance requirements while at the same time using them to the advantage of our business. Compliance is all about good honest business practices.

CPD training

It has come to our attention that CPD points are also taken into consideration when a candidate registers as a professional. This means that everybody in the following categories needs to start attending CPD courses as soon as possible whether they are registered with ECSA or not:

* Technicians.

* Technologists.

* Engineers.

* Certificated engineers (Government ticket).

Our industry needs more training to be registered with ECSA, through the SAIMC, in order to enable our members to register. If you have any training courses registered with the SAIMC or would like any courses registered, please contact [email protected] as soon as possible. The SAIMC will be sending out regular training bulletins with available CPD courses and these will be published in SA Instrumentation and Control.

Communication

Communication has always been a critical component within any organisation and the SAIMC is no exception. It is good to see the SAIMC Forum on our website slowly coming to life. This was created to enable members from across Africa to communicate with each other. Any member logged in can place an article, question or questionnaire.

Addressing the youth

We are eagerly awaiting the completion of the First Lego League trailer and the opening ceremony. We will send out invitations as soon as we know when the trailer will be unveiled.

The IIG has also requested the SAIMC to come up with a proposal to train people in the field of instrumentation, to pick up where tertiary education left off as well as assisting people to pass their trade tests. Eric Carter has drawn up a presentation that will be discussed shortly with the IIG.

Changing tertiary education

There were no remarks on the change within the education system published in last month’s SA Instrumentation and Control. Could it be that industry is quite happy with the changes?

Nuclear programme of South Africa

Ayande Myoli, CEO of NIASA (Nuclear Industry Association of South Africa), states that the demand for electricity in South Africa is expected to nearly double by 2030.

NIASA has contacted the SAIMC to become members in order to represent the automation, instrumentation, measurement and control industry in South Africa. It is investigating the ability in South Africa to provide local content to the 9,6 GW nuclear upgrade planned for South Africa. Exciting times ahead!
