Whilst working on the SAIMC exhibition stand at the recent Process Expo in Johannesburg, I overheard a comment made during a conversation between two gentlemen from outside of our area of activity. They were on our stand setting up the electronic display system to display our facilities.
The remark was about the many other stand attendants at the exhibition and it went as follows: “This is an amazing group, they all know each other, they are all great and they all help one another.”
It made me feel proud to have served in this community since the 1960s and, as you might expect, made me try to analyse why we are so different. In many ways the members of our group are techno-junkies and love of technology is our main motivator, commercial interests are in many cases of secondary consideration.
The other major influence is that of the SAIMC which advances us technically and also encourages the social aspects of our lives. One only has to think about the monthly technology evenings, site visits, golf days and other functions to understand this influence. It is encouraging how much the branch committees are responsible in this regard, and on a totally voluntary basis as well.
The etablished branches in Johannesburg, Durban, Secunda and Cape Town, and their sub branches, have all worked hard to engender this spirit of cooperation. If there are further groups of individuals who are of similar mind within Africa, please contact us to arrange the establishment of a branch in your area.
