Secunda branch

June 2011 SAIMC

The branch has hosted two technology evenings since the last publication.

In the past, and to a large extent still today, valve maintenance was performed on a time-based interval rather than in response to specific performance related issues, the problem being the cost associated with an unscheduled shutdown due to unexpected failure. To reduce the likelihood of these events and to reduce maintenance costs a move from preventative maintenance to predictive maintenance is the best course of action. Metso Automation hosted the first of the technology evenings with a presentation by Marko Jardim titled ‘Smart technologies on valves’. This presentation highlighted what is possible and what we could be doing with the intelligent positioners we already have installed at many places in our facilities.

Our second evening was a presentation titled “The pitfalls of utilising overall vibration trending for vibration monitoring – understanding frequency content’, by Jozua Joubert from Aveng. It was a most informative presentation especially for those of us who are not directly involved in vibration measurement.

Endress+Hauser will be presenting an air, gas and steam measurement seminar in Secunda from 8-9 June and in Witbank on 14 June. Part of this will be a practical demonstration on the Gas Flow Rig.

The golf day planned for May has been postponed till later in the year. For more information contact Peter Zietsman at [email protected] or +27 (0)83 310 7925.
