Process Expo 2011

As I am writing this letter we are preparing for Process Expo 2011. What a privilege to play a part in this huge event, it is the first time in a long while that we have participated and it will most definitely not be the last.

Compliance

Last month I wrote about compliance and the important role this plays in our business. Many different vendors, suppliers and potential customers pass through our doors and it is crucial that we keep our noses clean. If you see anything that needs to be investigated, please write to [email protected] and it will be forwarded to the council for investigation.

Council

The council of the SAIMC has been expanded to include the following non-voting members:

* Chairman of the IIG.

* Chairman of MESA SA.

* Technews Publishing.

We are excited to have these groups represented on the SAIMC as it will enable us to brand a new perspective to members. By the time this article goes to press, the MESA training will be complete, giving our members a wonderful opportunity to grow in this important area.

Professional registration

One again I have to warn all those in our industry to start registering with ECSA. There is no doubt that registration will be made compulsory and when this happens, people will not be able to work in South Africa unless they are registered with ECSA as professional engineers, professional technologists, professional technicians or certificated engineers (government ticket).

Applicants underestimate the time it takes; there are a lot of things that need to be done to become registered. The registration process is however adapting, to make it easier to register and track your registration. The standard is also changing, from: ‘The work must be aimed at investigating engineering problems requiring judgement’ to ‘Demonstrate ability to define, investigate and analyse engineering problems at a defined level’.

Leadership of the SAIMC

The SAIMC is defined as a Voluntary Association with ECSA. This allows it, among other things, to evaluate and allocate points to CPD courses. It also allows members to get a discount from their ECSA fees, making it cheaper to join both the SAIMC and ECSA rather than just registering with ECSA as a professional.

However, this role puts constraints on the SAIMC leadership in that more than 50% of the governing body has to be registered with ECSA. All the more reason why our members, especially those who would like to join the leadership ranks, ensure that they register with ECSA.

In the next letter I will be discussing our latest programmes with you, programmes that will take the Society one step closer to fulfilling its role as defined within our constitution. You will see where our name change came from and what our plans are for the future.
