At the last Johannesburg branch Technology Evening, Paulo de Sousa Gomes from Yokogawa presented the comparison between PLC/scada and DCS. In this detailed presentation the key features and unique characteristics of each system was highlighted and it was shown that although these technologies have numerous overlapping functionalities, choosing the best purpose control system for an application can be done methodically if a number of differentiating factors are considered.

A wide range was covered, from conventional PLCs to remote terminal units to safety PLCs (IEC61508/IEC61511). This topic also covered the difference between Web-enabled and Web-based scada systems, the history of PLC and DCS and the emergence of hybrid control systems.
This enlightening presentation was well received by delegates and was accredited for CPD points. The validation number is SAIMC_CPD_S_039, which will soon be available on the ECSA website for the delegates who attended the evening.
