The SAIMC Council held its AGM at the Rivonia Country Club on 10 March. All the 2009 councillors indicated their willingness to serve on the council for a further year thus making themselves available for re-nomination to the 2010 council barring one, Andrew Ashton, who has served for a period of two years. On behalf of the SAIMC council its branch chairmen and members we would like to extend our appreciation to Andrew for the many hours that he voluntarily contributed and all the work that he did in laying the foundations for our education subcommittee where he served.
We have one new councillor, Steven Meyer, who has joined both the Johannesburg branch as a committee member and our council. Steven is the editor of our official mouthpiece, SA Instrumentation and Control magazine. He comes with years of experience in our industry and we are delighted to welcome him aboard.
I was asked if I would remain on as president for a second term, which I gladly accepted, the 2010 council is therefore as follows:
Office Bearers:
* Johan van Jaarsveldt – president.
Johan van Jaarsveldt
* Peter Zietsman – vice president and branch chairman Secunda.
* Vivian MacFadyen – general secretary.
* Johan Maartens – general treasurer.
Councillors:
* Paulo De Sousa Gomes
* Richard Grover
* Steven Meyer
* Jones Kalelela
Branch chairmen (nominated to represent council):
* Debbie Scott – Johannesburg
* Vinesh Maharaj – Durban
* Theo Schmidt – Cape Town
* Leo Chikasa – Zambia
* Belmiro Beve – Mozambique
Johan Grobler – Education and CPD points (Council co-opted on for assistance)
Bill Steenberg – (Council co-opted on for assistance)
We were also proud to introduce Claire Rosewarne to the audience. Claire is employed as our secretary and actually runs the SAIMC for all of us. She is in contact with all our members but no one ever sees her in person. Claire is known as [email protected] and we were pleased to have this opportunity to have her present.
The branch of the year award was again hotly contested with Durban winning it this year, closely followed on points by Johannesburg and Secunda. Well done to Vinesh and the Durban branch committee for their hard work and the effort that they put in during the year.
On a personal note I would like thank all the 2009 councillors for the loyalty and support that they gave me over the past year and say thank you in advance for the advice help and support in 2010.

“Never have so many owed so much to so few.” This phrase is a famous quote by Winston Churchill, referring to the efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain during World War II. It highlights the immense gratitude owed to the relatively small number of pilots who played a crucial role in defending the United Kingdom from the German Luftwaffe.
