Every time I sign into my e-mail there are new membership applications awaiting approval. We have had a flood of new applications over the past two months. Together with chasing up 2009 fees and processing the new membership applications our secretary, Claire, has been working flat out and has done an amazing job of getting in the outstanding 2009 fees.

Our education subcommittee has been on the ball and very actively encouraged young students into our industry through initiatives like:
* The financial assistance from Schneider Electric (The Schneider Awards), handled by the Jhb Branch, which has been running successfully for the past 14 years.
* Apollo Construction (The Apollo Awards) handled by our Secunda Branch.
* The guest lecture programme where technical presentations together with the latest products are taken into the universities and demonstrated with training material offered by ABB, Endress+Hauser and Yokogawa. This has been greatly appreciated by the students and welcomed by the universities in Gauteng and Tshwane. Our KZN team are playing their part with the universities in their areas.
Please remember that the Negretti & Zambra (The Negretti award) is up for grabs again.
Zambia Branch recently celebrated its fifth year of existence. Officially opening in 2004 and headed up by Jones Kalela, today it boasts more than 350 members. The main branch being in Kitwe under chairman Victor Kameli, Lusaka sub-branch chairman is Maata Likando, Mufulira sub-branch Gabriel Kampupe and Chingola sub-branch Vincent Lembela. The appreciation expressed by the Zambia members for any type of support and assistance is most gratifying.

The 2009 banquet
We are trying to fix a date in October, the guest speaker will be world renowned Professor David Block, who will take us on a journey of our universe. The Rand Club, with its old colonial times atmosphere, has purposely installed a back scatter screen and projector to accommodate this type of presentation.
ECSA CPD course accreditation
Our relationship with ECSA is growing by the day as new members are joining the SAIMC in order keep their CPD score up to date. Thank you to Johan Grobler and Johan Maartens for their efforts in evaluating and crediting the training material and technical papers that are presented at our branches, as well as for a number of our patron member companies.

“Never have so many owed so much to so few.” This phrase is a famous quote by Winston Churchill, referring to the efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain during World War II. It highlights the immense gratitude owed to the relatively small number of pilots who played a crucial role in defending the United Kingdom from the German Luftwaffe.
