Feedback from the Process Automation, Instrumentation and Control Expo 2009 has been very positive. Held at Nasrec in May, this year’s exhibition reported visitor numbers up 15% on the previous exhibition (2007). Considering the shoddy state of the Global Economy, let us hope that this positive turnout bodes well for the South African engineering fraternity. Many exhibitors were proud to use the opportunity of the show to launch new equipment here – proving that innovation is alive and well and has not been subdued by the economic environment.
10th Scada Review
Once again our features editor, Andrew Ashton, has done a sterling job of compiling our annual scada review. Assimilating the end-users’ contributions into a format that makes for easy comparison of the different offerings is an immensely complex task eg, when Andrew asked, “Would you like an apple or a banana?” he would receive the answer, “Yes, please. I would like an orange.”
Despite these difficulties, this year’s review is an interesting analysis of the various installations. Andrew’s comments on the potential economic benefits that a well-implemented control system can afford a business warrant serious consideration.

Many companies are still struggling to manage the merger of different business disciplines as information technology epoxies the enterprise together. Our building management feature highlights some of these issues as well as the increasing demand for effective energy management.
