At our branch meeting on 3 December the topic of a quad rotor flying object (QRFO) was presented by Isak du Preez and was very well attended, particularly in view of the large number of other enjoyable distractions at this time of year. Isak was the recipient of the 2008 SAIMC Scholarship, and the quality of the presentation showed clearly that he was a deserving winner.
While describing how the control system was structured and set up he highlighted some unusual and somewhat unexpected findings and difficulties, and went on to outline how those aspects were addressed. At the end of the evening he demonstrated the QRFO’s flying capability and showed that he had succeeded in achieving remarkable control and stability through the use of his novel control system.
This was an excellent way to round off a very successful year for the Durban Branch.
