On 24 September 2008 SAIMC vice-president, Johan Van Jaarsveldt and Bill Steenberg, SAIMC general secretary, flew to Ndola in Zambia where they were met by Jones Kalela and driven to Kitwe to present a secretarial workshop at the Edinburgh Hotel.
The presentation was attended by all the Zambian secretaries. It was really impressive to see the level of commitment displayed by two of the sub-secretaries, Andrew Sikwese who jumped a bus all the way from Lusaka, and Jonathan Kasonde, who had just completed a full shift underground, knocked off duty, then travelled straight from Chingola to Kitwe by bus arriving more or less the same time as Andrew did. Both Titus Tito (Zambian branch chairman) and Jones Kalela (SAIMC council member) attended, as well as Rodgers Kayombo, the Zambian treasurer.
The session finished way past midnight. It essentially covered the background to the workshop by reviewing the president’s three 2008 goals and the progress made so far, in particular, effective communications throughout the SAIMC structures. Bill then covered the same material that he presented at the first secretarial workshop held in August this year in Johannesburg. This has ensured that there is alignment now with all branch and sub-branch secretaries throughout the SAIMC.
On Friday the 26th Johan and Bill attended the launch of the Midlands sub-branch in Lusaka. Many of the members made a huge effort to travel from the Copper belt area to Lusaka. The launch was a huge success and the SAIMC have an excellent committee nominated to steer the way forward. We have a lot of excitement about this branch as it has a lot of potential and the committee is very motivated. The Council presence there helped to reinforce the launch. The Midlands committee is as follows:
Likando Mataa – chairman, Lloyd Njenjere – vice chairman, Andrew Sikwese – secretary, Emmanuel Ndalama – treasurer, Augustine Chipungu – committee member, Takawira Musendo – committee member. We wish Likando and his team all of the best for the way forward.
The Zambian branch of the SAIMC celebrated its fourth anniversary on 4 June this year and Midlands is the fourth sub-branch to be launched to date. The other sub-branches are Chingola, Mufilira and Kitwe. We applaud Jones Kalela for his dedication and hard work as the ‘father’ of the SAIMC in Zambia – we wish you all well in the years ahead.
