August 2008 SAIMC

Johannesburg says hi to all its members and the branches. Herewith an edited version of our newsletter sent out earlier.

Golf news – yes the day dawned. The clock finally ticked down for Richard Scott of WNIP to set the game in motion by teeing-off from 1st tee at 10h00 on Friday 4 July while Sean Frost of Siemens did the same from the 10th, and the other players followed at 7 minute intervals. The day was windy but not too nippy and the players had a good day out on the green. I did it the easy way – golf cart from watering hole to watering hole. That is how you do it! When it was all over, Paulo De Sousa Gomes, our 2008 branch chairman, MC’d for the prize giving and the dinner that followed. The event was a huge success, the result of a lot of hard work from our vice-chairman, Debbie Scott, and our E+H staatmaker, Kessie Coetzee. Thanks to Debbie and Kessie. Well the long and short of it is that we turned some profit so we can carry out our plans for the rest of the year. Thank you to all the players who participated and particular thanks to the sponsors.

At our last meeting on 18 June we held our third technology evening of 2008. Our speaker for the evening was Alex Willemse Jnr, Alpret Control Specialists product specialist on asset optimisations, and his subject was Wireless Technology, Wireless Security and Wireless Networking. While the debate goes on as to whether one should opt for Profibus or Foundation Fieldbus instead of dedicated cable runs, others are contemplating the quantum leap straight to wireless, and we obviously wanted to hear all about it. Alex gave us an excellent presentation and live demonstration of the technology involved. We had a fantastic turn out (65) for this meeting, which left standing room only. Thanks to all the visitors who attended, you are welcome to attend again and do not need to be members to do so.

At our next meeting the speaker for the next Technology Evening on 9 July will be Paulo de Sousa Gomes, national systems manager for Yokogawa South Africa. Paulo is also the chairman of the new FFSAMC (Field Foundation) Users Group. The event will have taken place by the time you are reading this issue of SA&IC. The presentation will consist of the following; Brief introduction of the FFSAMC, All about FF, FF for the Process Industry, Developments, Benefits, Trends in the I&A market, and FF for Safety.

See you at the next meeting – Bill Steenberg.
