Johannesburg branch news

September 2007 SAIMC

The 6th SAIMC branch and technology evening meeting was held on 11 July at the usual Rivonia venue.

Achieving commercial bid compliance

Our speaker was Jonathan Lee, head of the Procurement Department at Fluor, who gave a presentation: 'Achieving Commercial Bid Compliance - steps vendors should follow to ensure tender submissions are in strict accordance to commercial specification'. We all know that this is an issue that all suppliers are affected by, since vendors are usually notified by commercial letter that their bid submission was unsuccessful, without explanation.

In summary, Jonathan's message was: Read and understand the RFQ. Complete the Bidder's Checklist. Submit separate and complete Commercial and Technical sections. Complete and sign all the returnable documents. Submit the bid on time (or request an extension as early as possible). Address all communication to the Procurement Officer.

Visitors

There is only one comment on the turnout for this presentation - the word is WOW. We filled all 50 seats set out. Mandisi Ndlovu and Donald Johnson from the Fluor Procurement Department attended in support of Jonathan and took part in the Q&A session that followed. Also a warm welcome to all those who do not belong to the SAIMC but came to share in the presentation and support our meeting. Feel free to approach any of the committee members if you are interested in membership.

Membership fees

Claire has confirmed that there is still a huge amount of fees outstanding. Please fax confirmation of your payment to 086 616 0141. Contact Claire at the SAIMC Secretariat using [email protected] and remember to confirm all your contact details!

Year-end golf day and rules

The Committee has decided to move our year-end golf day into early 2008, so watch this space. We will post you on what is planned as we get closer to the day.

We need your vote on the continued use of the 'mulligan' and the 'gimmee' at our next golf day. Should we scrap the use of the 'mulligan' and the 'gimmee'? Yes or No? Please send your vote to [email protected]. If you cannot be bothered to cast your vote then live with the outcome!

Ed's notes: This branch news has been edited from Bill Steenberg's Johannesburg branch newsletter, with his kind permission.
