August 2007 SAIMC

Away meeting

The 5th SAIMC branch meeting was held as an 'away' technology evening on 13 June at Wits University. Paulo da Silva presented a brief overview of the history of the SAIMC and Prof. Ian Jandrell spoke about the role of an institute in the life of a professional engineer.

James Portman, founder of Laser Measurement, gave a presentation titled 'Multidimensional Measurement using Lasers'. His passion for turning extreme ideas and complex technologies into commercially viable and useful products has resulted in many accolades including SABS Design Institute Prototype Awards, Technology 100 and the President's Export Awards.

James' presentation held the audience enthralled and an hour passed like 5 minutes. The visuals were stunning - there are no words to describe them adequately.

Thank you James for opening up your world to us - it was an excellent presentation.

Visitors

We had a good turn out from the university, including Professors Ian Jandrell and Brian Wigdordwitz. Even though it was bang in the middle of exams, ten students, some of them post graduate, attended. We look forward to welcoming them again and thank them for attending.

Despite the threat of striking unions and disruptions in Johannesburg, 23 other visitors attended. It was good to have such a large turnout under the circumstances! I must mention Alpret by name who turned out in full force. Thanks Eddie and the others, and also to Vega who gave strong support.

The SAIMC - Wits association

We have agreed that we need to rekindle this association and we will be returning to Wits with more meetings.

Golf day feedback

Thank you everyone who supported us and contributed to the fundraising exercise. This is our main source of branch income and helps to pay for the goodies and finger snacks we lay on at our branch meetings amongst other things. I am told that we sold 27 four balls and several watering holes. Look out for more feedback next month.

Education drive

Three students deserving of SAIMC educational support are in the process of being handed cheques that should fill a gap or two. All thanks to the educational support of Schneider Electric. Their details are:

JF Heukelman: University of Pretoria: Best final year project student - Measurement & Control. He was handed a cheque at the April graduation ceremony.

AM Kamper: University of Johannesburg: Most outstanding student, Project Research - Instrumentation and Control. The Award and a cheque will be presented by SAIMC President, Viv MacFadyen, at an awards ceremony being held on 26 July.

R Marques: University of Witwatersrand: The Schneider Automation Student Award. His award was handed over at a ceremony held on 31 May.

Membership fees

Claire has confirmed that there is still a huge amount of fees outstanding. Come on members - show your mettle. Please also remember to confirm all your contact details!

Next branch meeting

Because of the public holiday in the first week of August that meeting has been re-scheduled to 15 August at the Rivonia Recreation Club. Look out for more details.
