SAIMC

From the president's desk

October 2006 SAIMC

Well, we now have it!

We are in possession of a Certificate of Recognition that we are a category B Voluntary Association of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Makes you think does it not?

At first thought it appears as if the ECSA is just another regulatory body producing red tape, but this is not the case. One of the goals of ECSA is to make our environment a safer place to live. It endeavours to ensure that work is done by persons qualified to perform that work. As an example, we will not have shopping malls collapsing, killing hundreds in the process.

Voluntary organisations such as the SAIMC provide an essential service to the community as we do a lot to maintain a high level of expertise amongst our members. The members now have added value in that their costs of registering with ECSA are reduced by virtue of their association with the SAIMC. A further benefit is that if they participate in our activities, there is a possibility of earning points for their Continuing Professional Development (CPD). These points are considered when renewing one's membership.

Already, we are receiving numerous applications for membership of the SAIMC, and we look forward to assisting in the goals of the ECSA.

It is to be noted, that the ECSA has been constituted to assist with the application of the Engineering Profession Act 46 of 2000. This Act stipulates that anybody doing engineering work must be qualified and be registered to perform this work. The obvious result will be that if you are not registered - you will not be able to perform any work where you may do engineering functions, unless you are supervised by a registered person. This could seriously impact on your ability to be employed.

To find out more, I strongly recommend that you spend some quality time studying their website, www.ecsa.co.za.
