August 2006 SAIMC

Training forms an integral part of the SAIMC activities. A great deal of time and effort is put into the training of students during guest lectures at universities as well as the presentation of awards to students who are performing well. The SAIMC would like to thank Schneider Electric for its support during the past 10 years and for its contributions towards these awards. The 2005 award was presented to a student at the University of the Witwatersrand, Shakir Mohamed. The next presentation will be held at the Vaal University of Technology in Vanderbijlpark on 4 August 2006.

The monthly meeting in June was not very well attended and it was disappointing considering the quality of the presentation delivered. There were so few people there that we needed 'Rent-A-Crowd' - the poor attendance could have been due to the public holiday on the Friday. The AS-i interface presentation by Chris Cronje from Shorrock Automation was delivered very professionally - a complicated topic explained in layman's terms. The response from the audience was very positive with many questions being asked and great interest shown in the 'working model' after the formalities were over.

The Johanneburg Branch organised a visit to the SAA Flight Simulator on 27 June 2006. Cornu Perold, our past president, was the last person to book his flight. The 17 'passengers' all arrived before 07:00 with Roelien Venter arriving just in time before the gates closed. In the freezing weather, Nico Marneweck was the best 'Traffic kop' that Johannesburg will have for many years to come. Taryn Tim was voted the 'Best Pilot of the Day'. The morning entailed rides in one of SAA's flight simulators as well as a tour of its training facilities. This site visit was extremely successful with everyone learning a great deal whilst having a lot of fun.
