As we have indicated over recent issues of SA Instrumentation & Control, this is the last issue of the magazine that editor, John Gibbs, will be directly involved in. Some of the material used in future issues will still have his 'special touch', so this is not a complete good-bye. John, "Many thanks for the unquantifiable contribution that you have made to SAI&C. We wish you well as you head your personal growth into the turmoil of the global share markets."
We are delighted to welcome John's successor, Ms Jaime Chan, to the SAI&C team. Born in Hong Kong, Jaime completed her school education in Johannesburg with honours colours for both academics and cultural contributions. She holds an MSc (Mech. Eng.) from Wits, with majors in applied thermodynamics and heat transfer. Her research dissertation was on the subject of 'Pneumatic conveying of slush ice through horizontal plastic pipes (as applicable to deep mine cooling)'. By the time you read this, Jaime is expected to have completed her studies for an LLB degree from Unisa. She has already enrolled for her next field of study, economics.
Jaime's most recent work has been as a design engineer at Denel Optronics in the field of periscope design and handheld laser devices. Prior to working at Denel, she worked at Circuit Breaker Industries (CBI) on the research and development of hydraulic-magnetic circuit breakers. She has also worked on the design of comprehensive fire protection systems.
I can honestly say that I have never received a 'grilling' from a job candidate, like the one that Jaime meted out to Technews' management team during her first interview with us. It made a really refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill interview. Jaime was an extraordinary candidate and we have no doubt that she will prove to be an extraordinary editor. Working from our Johannesburg office, her e-mail address is [email protected]
