May 2006 SAIMC

At our monthly meeting on Wednesday, 29 March, the Durban Branch of the SAIMC awarded an inaugural scholarship in the discipline of Control Engineering 2006 to Luke Harrison, a final year engineering student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

At the award ceremony are Prof. Ed Boje, Prof. Ed Eitelberg, Luke Harrison, Dean Trattles and Kevin McElroy

This one-year unencumbered scholarship, valued at R15 000, was awarded on the basis of his academic achievement and commitment to the university in pursuit of an engineering degree majoring in the control field.

The conditions of the scholarship are as follows:

1. Electrical and Mechanical Engineering streams: minimum 65% mark in Systems and Simulation and in Control Systems 1.

2. Chemical Engineering stream: minimum 65% mark in Instrument Technology and in Process Modelling and Optimisation.

3. Undertaking to complete a minimum of 16 credits of control related coursework in the year of scholarship.

4. Undertaking to complete the final year design on a control related topic under the supervision of one, or more, of the recognised control leaders in the Faculty of Engineering at UKZN in the year of scholarship.

5. Undertaking to attend monthly SAIMC meetings.

6. Undertaking to present the final year design at an SAIMC meeting.

The Durban Branch is indeed fortunate to have the support of both Professor Edward Boje and Professor Eduard Eitelberg from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in drafting the requirements and managing the scholarship to ensure the goals of the SAIMC are met during the year.

This scholarship is an excellent example of the SAIMC using its linkages with industry and academia to meet its mandate in advancing the profession of control engineering. We wish Luke all the best in his studies this year.
