December 2005 SAIMC

Well, the year 2005 is all but kaput. The council annual banquet was a great success with many participants saying that it was the best ever. By the time you read this, the Johannesburg summer golf day has been enjoyed; and we have had our last meeting for the year. Members may now feel all is over for the year but that is not so. The council and committees are all hard at work preparing for the AGM, writing annual reports, and in general tidying up after the activities of the last 12 months.

The year has been extremely busy and the SAIMC is now poised to advance its vision and mission. That is to be the Institute of choice, serving the needs of its members and stakeholders in the development of the measurement and control industry, and to advance the standards of theory and practice in the fields of measurement and control through numerous initiatives. Exciting times are at hand.

However, there is a rider to the goals that we have set, we need more member participation. To date, we have enjoyed excellent meeting and event participation but there is always something more that we can do. By making your services available, you can take some credit for advancing our service to industry as a recognised profession. Please let us know how you can help (ideas, committee participation or even improved meeting attendance).

Many members have found that putting something back into an industry that has supported them is a fulfilling exercise. I have personally experienced this when making presentations at our universities; the response was phenomenal. The students were appreciative and showed a good deal of interest.

As usual for the Johannesburg Branch, the chairman stands down after a year in office and the vice chairman becomes the new chairman. As this is my last editorial for the Johannesburg Branch, I am taking this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of our supporters and members, especially to the 2005 branch committee.

Vivian A. MacFadyen, Johannesburg branch chairman, [email protected]
