Pioneering and launching of SAIMM - Zambia Branch
South Africa Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) president, Frank Egerton, requested SAIMC - Zambia to help establish a SAIMM - Zambia Branch. President, Cornu Perold, and Jones Kalela, met Frank in March 2005 at UNISA to acknowledge SAIMM's request.

After SAIMC - Zambia founded the SAIMM Branch, a colourful official launch took place on 28 June, 2005 at the Hotel Edinburgh in Kitwe. Almost the whole SAIMM secretariat, the president, the president-elect and immediate past president were present at the function. Also present were senior company officials from AST-RSA, whose pledge was highest, to give the new SAIMM - Zambia Branch US $2000, apart from helping the new branch on the capacity building.
SAIMM president thanked SAIMC Council and Zambian Branch for helping out in the establishment of SAIMM - Zambia Branch. He also announced the Institute's transformation to Southern Africa Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
Three members of the SAIMC - Zambian Branch attended the occasion. Jones was the Master of Ceremony. The SAIMM - Zambian branch executive: John Mutambo, Newton Ndhlovu, Fenso Simwanza and Whyson Musonda. The EIZ president, Tom Kamwendo, graced the official launch.
Branch and Sub Branch organisation
Out of the planned five branch meetings the branch has had four meetings during the period under review. Activities at sub branches are picking up, especially Chingola. All three sub branches are busy with recruitment and encouragement of members to pay their dues.
SAIMC - Zambia golf T-shirts
The branch has had a manufacturing company produce SAIMC - Zambia golf T-shirts. A first batch of 32 were manufactured and sold during the 1st anniversary of branch establishment, in Chingola on 2 May, 2005. The project will be ongoing and be managed at the secretariat - Kitwe.
SAI&C magazines/journals
The problems of couriering the SAI&C magazines and other related SAIMC journals from RSA to Zambia has not been solved yet. The branch executive is, however, doing everything possible to address the situation.
The branch continues to face ever growing challenges in the growth and strengthening of SAIMC in Zambia.
