SAIMC: Durban branch

The Durban branch of the SAIMC held its annual general meeting at the Premier Splendid Inn in Pinetown on 24 January 2024, starting at 18:00. The small number of people attending the meeting was disappointing – ten − but there was an equal number of proxies and the meeting was declared properly constituted and was able to proceed. A decision had previously been made to hold the meeting in person rather than as a hybrid or totally virtual meeting, and we hope for a better turnout next year.

Financially the year proved to be satisfactory, as shown by the report prepared by Kevin McElroy. A summary of the year’s events was presented by Howard Lister on behalf of Mark Calvert, the branch’s general manager, who was called away on business.

Election of the branch management team was completed electronically beforehand, and the results were accepted by those present at the meeting. Office bearers were designated at the first meeting of the new team. The team for this year is:

General manager: Mark Calvert

Deputy general manager: Howard Lister

Finance manager: Kevin McElroy

Secretary: John Owen-Ellis

Advertising: Jane van der Spuy

Tertiary education liaison: Professor Akshay, Saha and Anil Lonappan

Regional development: Mfanasibili Nkonyane

It was recommended that the successful practice over the past nine years of co-opting members be continued, as co-opted members have made valuable contributions during their tenure.

After the business of the annual general meeting was concluded, the evening was rounded off with everyone enjoying networking over supper and some drinks.
