June 2005 SAIMC

The month of May was a busy month for the committee. We were present at the Process 2005 Exhibition where the National Council and branch committee members all had a turn at manning the SAIMC stand. We are also actively organising our winter golf day to be held at Kempton Park golf course on 8 July. Limited to 30 four balls, we are filling up fast. We have some active, enthusiastic golfers on our branch committee who are working day and night to organise this event. To enter or for more info please contact: [email protected]

Meetings

Last month's meeting, 5 May, was sponsored by the CSIR - NML. Mr Louis Marais explained tractability to a National standard. His presentation covered who is who when it comes to accreditation and verification. The example that Louis used was the measurement of time; this is taken for granted in our daily lives, however it affects every aspect from the beginning to the end. Louis is able to trace and record time differences within 10 nanoseconds of each other. His presentation was both informative and interesting.

The many questions that followed really helped us to understand the roll of SANAS, CSIR-NML and the SABS and their responsibilities. If you missed this meeting you actually missed out. Louis Marais can be contacted at: 012 841 3013 or [email protected]

P.S. We would like to thank Rob Harley for organising and coordinating this presentation.

This month's meeting, 8 June, will be sponsored by Alpret Control Specialists. They are going to explain control valve sizing and the effects that incorrect sizing can have on our environment and noise pollution. We all look forward to this presentation to be held at the Rivonia Country Club on 8 June 18:00 for 18:30. This is your opportunity to meet and network and socialise with other instrumentation and control people. The doors are open to everyone, so please feel welcome to join us.

Site visits

Visits are being set up to: BMW, SAA and Rand Water Board.

We wish Vivian, our branch chairman, a speedy recovery. I would like to take this opportunity to again thank our committee members for their assistance and dedication to the SAIMC. All the cogs are now running on synthetic oil.

Johan van Jaarsveldt, branch secretary
