Zambian Branch is one year old

June 2005 SAIMC

"More often a company will declare some employees redundant as a major measure to cut cost than to realise that the poor measurement and control services and skill can contribute to huge losses in a mining or other industrial businesses", said the chief engineer from Konkola Copper Mines, at the Branch's first anniversary in the Chingola Gymkhana Club - birthplace of the Zambian SAIMC branch. He said until managers in the industry place emphasis on the quality of instruments and skill as a matter of priority and proper investment, production cost cutting measures will not be effective.

The celebration started at 9:30 am and ended at 4:45pm. It was well attended by more than 47 members of SAIMC. The function kicked off with the chief guest commissioning the billboard, which read: Chingola Gymkhana Club - SAIMC, Zambia birthplace. Later, there was a technical talk on the impact of weightometers in the transport of copper ore from underground to refinery via concentrator. There was also an instrumentation product and services presentation from the sponsors of the event: GLTA (Z), Silicon Electronics, EC Mining (Z) and Vehiweb Investment.

The afternoon was characterized by social interaction with music, braai and the launching of SAIMC - Zambia Golf T-Shirts; 30 T-shirts were sold at the function.

The Branch intends to go into the production of Golf T-shirts as one of its fundraising ventures. Members were informed of the next meeting's events: A technology presentation on infrared measurement and site visit. Hats off to Chingola Sub Branch for taking a lead in the organisation of the 1st Anniversary Cerebration.
