Technews publications leading the way forward

June 2005 News

It seems that every time I write one of these columns, I am able to report on some new development of one of the magazines in the Technews stable. Last time it was regarding the launch of SA Instrumentation & Control's sister publication, the Motion Control Buyers' Guide (www.mcbg.co.za). This time it is the launch of Computer Business Review (Africa).

Computer Business Review (CBR) was set up in 1993 to provide senior professionals working in information technology with serious, in-depth analysis, which would be both highly readable and useful. The editorial is written for business technology oriented readers by journalists with extensive knowledge of business issues.

CBR is the only computer magazine to be syndicated by The New York Times, joining other prestigious publications such as The Economist, The New Scientist and The Financial Times.

In each issue, the magazine analyses key events in the IT industry, the impact of new technologies, examines key products and companies, and reports on financial news and industry trends and indicators. CBR provides information and analysis that is not swamped by technical detail or tied down to specific technologies.

Those senior instrumentation and control professionals that are looking for insight into the ever-merging relationships between IT, industrial control and business, will find this magazine an invaluable tool. A 12-month complimentary subscription is available to qualifying professionals at www.networktimes.co.za/subscribe.html.

Issue highlights

On a similar line, in this issue of SAI&C, Maurice McDowell looks at the question, "Is MES the answer to competitiveness for industry?" He wades through a morass of TLAs (three-letter-acronyms) to try and make sense of the jargon that is so readily slung around by many of the technology 'experts'.

Michael Brown, in addition to his regular discussion on loop optimisation, once again addresses 'Control Loop Q&A'. Interestingly enough, this month's questions come from Indonesia... an indication of the far reach of SAI&C.

A reminder that past issues of SAI&C (and all other Technews publications) are available, free of charge, in a searchable archive at www.instrumentation.co.za.

Vendors that are listed in the SA Instrumentation & Control Buyers' Guide are reminded to keep an eye open for the annual update e-mails that will be sent out in the next month.

IIG 2004 survey results

The Industrial Instrumentation Group (IIG) has released the results of its 2004 survey of the South African marketplace. The document makes for very interesting reading and can be used as a valuable tool to vendor-companies wishing to plan their business strategies. Details on how to obtain a copy of the survey are available at www.iig.org.za.
