SAIMC Zambia - Copperbelt University Technical Corporation
April 2005
SAIMC
At the official launching, on 27 November 2004, SAIMC Zambia expressed its fear that unless an intervention programme was put in place, C&I skill loss facing the Zambia industry would have a long term negative impact on the national and southern Africa sub Sahara region economy. The negative effect was already being felt by the mining and manufacturing industries. The branch invited the industry and the institutions of higher learning, to join hands for an intervention. The copper belt university (CBU) pledged to work with SAIMC - Zambia.
On 3 February 2004, officials from SAIMC - Zambia visited the CBU to follow-up on the pledge the institution made at the official launching. Jones Kalela (branch chairman), Tito Titus (branch secretary) and Sagie Chetty (sub committee chairman - C&I Education and Training) met with the dean of School Technology (Dr Singh), accompanied by the head of department - chemical.
The meeting proved to be a worthwhile brainstorming and resolved to put in place, within the first quarter of 2005, a Technical Corporation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the CBU and SAIMC - Zambia. A Project Proposal Document, leading to the introduction of a Diploma Program starting in the 2006 academic year, could soon be put in place. It was also agreed that a Joint Working Committee would be constituted and have the Project Proposal Document ready by May/June 2005.
The next meeting would take place towards the end of March or beginning of April 2005. A lot of work and support was expected from all stakeholders.
