Our annual dinner/dance in October was a huge success and although the final tally has not yet been calculated (at time of going to press), we are confident that there will be many more pennies in the Rustenburg Branch coffers that will be forwarded to the 2005 committee.

We would like to thank the president, Cornu Perold and his good lady, Marionelle, for their attendance as well as a good turnout from the Johannesburg Branch. Also, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the sponsors that not only made the evening possible, but most enjoyable as well.

Our meeting on 17 November was kindly sponsored by Bestobell, and Paul Greyling, Angelique Koekemoer and Marius Cramer were in attendance to deliver an interesting presentation on ultrasonic 'time-of-flight' flowmeters. Paul expounded on the virtues of the flowmeter by noting that:

* There are no moving parts.

* There is no drift.

* There is no maintenance.

* There is no pressure drop.

* There is a fast response time.

* Installation is easy and non-intrusive with clamp-on probes.

The principle of operation is to pass two high frequency signals in opposite directions between two opposing ultrasonic transducers and then measure the transit time (time-of-flight) difference between the two, which is directly proportional to the speed of fluid being measured. A very interesting concept! Paul, Angelique and Marius were duly thanked for their input and as usual, the evening was rounded off with snacks and drinks supplied by the RPM-R Recreation Club.

The SAIMC Rustenburg Branch AGM will be this month (January).
