Zambian Branch
January 2005
SAIMC
The hard work of the SAIMC is once again bearing fruit. On 27 November 2004 we saw the inauguration of a new branch in Zambia, and already there is talk of further sub-branches. This was an exciting event and was attended by two SAIMC council members, the president Cornu Perold and Vivian MacFadyen, who also represented the Johannesburg branch.
Cornu Perold, SAIMC president
The new Zambian branch will be twinned with the Johannesburg branch, which will assist in every way possible to get the SAIMC well established in this new territory. The members of the branch executive committee are all enthusiastic and prepared to go the extra mile to establish the credibility of the branch within the local industry.
Jones Kalela, Zambian Branch chairman
The inauguration proceedings took place on the Saturday morning after which a lunch was served. Phil Liebenburg received special thanks for his behind-the-scenes efforts in encouraging interest in the SAIMC. All the event sponsors (SAIMC Council, SAIMC Johannesburg Branch, Endress+Hauser, Yokogawa, Siemens, ICS, Krohne, Rockwell Automation, Protea Automation) and local business persons took part in a mini exhibition, together with presentations that highlighted new developments.
Vivian MacFadyen, representing the Johannesburg Branch
Pledges of funds and assistance were made from everybody present. The most important was for the establishment of a skills development programme for instrumentation engineers at the local university.
Cornu Perold was especially impressed with the exuberant spirit of the members of the new branch and said that the South African contenders for the Branch of the Year prize should watch out for stiff competition from Zambia.

“Never have so many owed so much to so few.” This phrase is a famous quote by Winston Churchill, referring to the efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain during World War II. It highlights the immense gratitude owed to the relatively small number of pilots who played a crucial role in defending the United Kingdom from the German Luftwaffe.
