October 2004 SAIMC

Meetings

As published, the September meeting was sponsored by Trainrite, on the topic of learner training. Presented by Peter Roos, it attracted all our regular attendees and a number of interested parties from the Technikons and other training facilities. This meeting was not only interesting but also strategic for the SAIMC as the new legislation can affect our training sponsorships and overall vision in the future. Peter highlighted the opportunities and tax savings that can be claimed by companies that use the system and offer training correctly. It seems that the unfortunate situation that we now find ourselves in has been addressed. We still are concerned, however, that even if it is possible to 'fast track' education with intelligent pupils, it is impossible to 'fast track' experience.

We were honoured in having our President, Cornu Perold, present, who shared some of National Council's plans for the future. A sub-committee has been established to drive the SAIMC into the future with new and exciting projects. One major task is nearing fruition; a rework of the website that will provide members with tools and information that will assist them in their daily work.

The meeting scheduled for the 13 October will be sponsored by Fluor Daniels and Dick Perry is going to share his experience in safety systems. He will cover SIL 1,2 + 3 (safety integrity levels) and explain how accident prevention is done using ESD (Emergency shut down procedures).

* November will be our final meeting for the year and, as said previously, we are planning something rather special. The idea is to approach the Johannesburg Civic Theatre and make a block booking for a live show. Full details to follow.

* Keep a look out for your e-mails or send us one so that we can add your name to our monthly invitation list.

Our meetings are normally held at the Rivonia Country Club every second Wednesday of the month at 18h00. The presentation starts at 18h30 sharp and is limited to 1 hour ending at 19h30. Drinks and eats are sponsored, so come and join in the discussion and gain some valuable knowledge.

Site visits

* 15th October: An exclusive site visit has been arranged for us to see the SAA facilities and see their 747 flight simulator. For security reasons these visits have become very difficult to organise. It is because the SAIMC is a professional institute that we have been able to arrange this visit. It is a benefit of your membership to be able to participate.

* 11th November: Together with our Secunda Branch, we have made arrangements to go to Eskom TSI to see its Sanas approved Flow Pressure and Temperature Calibration Laboratory. Eskom will host us in its staff canteen, where eats and refreshments will be served. Do not miss this opportunity. Bookings are now open - contact Johan Grobler at [email protected] or Jan van Wyk at [email protected]

Planned visits still to come

Natref, Rand Water Board and the SABC.

Membership and annual subs

If you have not yet paid your 2004 membership subs or would like to become a member of the SAIMC, please contact our secretariat's offices on 011 888 8332, [email protected]

They are willing to assist you with any query that you may have.

SAIMC November golf day

We are still in the process of investigating an appropriate venue for this event. We will send out e-mail invitations shortly.

I thank all of our regular attendees and my committee for their enthusiastic commitment.

Chairman, Johan van Jaarsveldt
