SAIMC: Vaal branch

January 2021 SAIMC

The end of the year can be an emotional time for all of us. Was this your best year yet, or not so great? You start to get a feel as the end approaches, and 2020 is no exception, especially with the ‘new normal’ brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. We are all counting down the days to 2021 – a new year with new possibilities.

During 2020, the branch has started engaging with Dr Joubert, head of the Department of Process Control and Computer Systems at the Vaal University of Technology, regarding the role SAIMC can play at tertiary institutions. The following topics, amongst others, were discussed:

• Student mentorship and career guidance.

• Participation of students in SAIMC and ECSA, as well as the benefits of being members thereof.

• Connecting students to industry, thus recommending them to companies which can absorb them as in-service trainees.

• Recognition of new qualification frameworks such as the phasing out of the B.Tech degree and introduction of the Advanced Diploma and work integrated learning. To unpack this topic, the branch will host Dr Joubert during a technical evening in February, just before the 2021 academic year begins.

The branch thanks all patron members, sponsors, technical evening presenters, the committee and members at large for their continued support during 2020.
