The technical evening of 14 October was once again presented via Microsoft Teams.
How do we approach HMI and camera solutions in Ex environments? This was explained by Diogo Fidalgo from Stahl. Most of us know that HMIs are used as an interface for industrial machine control, but in this case, we looked at how it can be used to access or process relevant video feed in a hazardous area. Diogo explained that HMIs can be split into thin clients, very basic PCs connected to an existing network and also lowest in cost, KVM, medium in cost point to point connection and can connect to a single PC, and then panel or industrial PCs, full blown PCs acting inside the hazardous area and of course highest in cost.
Moving on to cameras, we looked at the uses of cameras in Ex areas, security, surveillance, quality control and maintenance teams. Using video management software, one can now record, analyse and proactively control a system or area. Using video analytics, it is now possible to incorporate alarms and also retrieve critical information regarding an incident.
