Johannesburg branch
November 2002
SAIMC
By the time you read this, we would have had another branch meeting, two site visits and at least three visits by our education sub-committee to tertiary institutions around the country. At the same time, our favourite sub-branch in the Vaal Triangle is making strong progress and increasing their membership slowly but surely. They had their very first golf day on 10 October and, if this event is anything to go by, we can expect greatness from them in the near future.
Things are going very well for Johannesburg and the sheer number and frequency of activities this late in the year is mind-blowing. This committee is going all out for the Branch of the Year trophy and already our point tally to date is more than it was for the whole of last year. Our membership count has once again risen to above 400 in response to the call from Council to actively market the SAIMC on branch level. We predict a steady growth in numbers of around 7 to 8% for 2002.
We have also noticed a marked increase in attendance of our monthly meetings over the past three months, and this is especially rewarding for the Johannesburg committee. This is a clear indication to us that we are selecting the correct topics for our meetings and that the calibre of the speakers are what our members are looking for. The October meeting was hosted by Citect, their second talk this year, and was once again very informative and sparked off a very active discussion session afterwards.
Next month we will report on the Sports Illustrated event, and hopefully we can include one or two pictures for those who missed out.
Parting shot: Anybody who can decipher the leading paragraph in the Secunda news for October, please send us the clear version, as we seem to have misplaced our Enigma machine!
