Problems on reciprocating machinery are mainly caused by impact damage due to loose rod nuts, worn pins, liquid in the process, etc. It has been very difficult to monitor the severity of these impacts, because conventional rotating machine techniques do not work on high amplitude, short duration signals (events).
The Metrix impact transmitter uses a piezoelectric crystal sensing element, with a peak detector circuit, and a timing function. An impact event counter and memory device is used to record events meeting a preset amplitude threshold level, and the output signal represents the number of events above the threshold level that occur within a preset time window. Mechanical impacts are thus measured and qualified within the transmitter, and the loop-powered 4 to 20 mA current output is proportional to the impact severity.
By monitoring the mechanical looseness of a machine, advance warning of impending problems is provided, and severe damage could be avoided. Applications exist in gas production, processing plants and pipelines.
