System Integration & Control Systems Design

New system intregrator is formed

January 2003 System Integration & Control Systems Design

The birth of Motiontronix was on the cards for quite a while, the process was accelerated by the fact that Control Techniques SA had needed to streamline the company for some time, in particular the sales department. Having three packages to choose from, Rudi van der Merwe opted to use the opportunity to start his own company.

van der Merwe observed that the brain drain was leaving a demand for system integrators, and so an agreement was made between himself and Control Techniques that Motiontronix would sell and support Control Techniques' products in the systems market. Motiontronix will therefore concentrate on systems and related products, selling and supporting AC, DC, servo drives and soft starters, PLCs, HMI, motion and power controllers servo, induction motors and gearboxes, circuit breakers and LV switchgear, software and software integration sensors, EMC filters, cables and connectors, feedback devices, industrial networking, communications panels and installation commissioning, service and training.

Motiontronix has thus far negotiated representation with Control Techniques (with its full range of products) CBI (with its PLCs and HMIs from Mitsubishi Electric) and Beijers Zest Electric motors from WEG. There are also agreements with other SIs and distributors to work together to give customers the best support and back-up.

The main aim of Motiontronix is not really the products but to provide customers with a reliable package or system, hence its slogan: 'Your partner in system integration and automation' with the company logo including the catch-phrase: 'The power to integrate solutions'.

van der Merwe says that he drew much of his inspiration from Alex Walt, whom he had the privilege to work with at MSA Manufacturing, distributing Mitsubishi products in South Africa. Not being a technical person and with technology improving daily, Walt familiarised himself with computers at an age most people would sit back and enjoy their pensions. He started MSA and built it into a R100 million a year turnover company. His strategy, commitment and dedication to suppliers and customers is admirable.
