Endress+Hauser recently installed the new FDU 86 ultrasonic sensor at SA Maltsters in Caledon (SAM Caledon), a company affiliated to SA Breweries and involved in producing malt, a product of barley which is used to make beer.
A single test unit of the new 70 m long-range high-temperature FDU 86 ultrasonic sensor was installed in a malt storage silo at SAM Caledon. These silos are a tough testing ground for any level measurement equipment because of the extremely dusty conditions inside, especially during filling. They are unusually tall silos - about 38 m in height – which are filled from the top by conveyors. This means that the malt is literally poured over the level measurement sensor and because malt particles are so small - as tiny as 4 mm - sensors can soon become clogged with build-up and consequently inoperable. This was what had happened to the existing sensors at SAM.
SAM Caledon intends replacing all existing silo level measurement equipment with the new FDU86 ultrasonic sensors.
