Food industry gets a new conductivity transmitter

May 2000 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The new Smartec S CLD 132 is the latest conductivity transmitter from Endress+Hauser. Designed specifically for the food, beverage and bottling industries, the unit offers hygienic, electrodeless inductive conductivity, concentration and temperature measurements of highly conductive liquids, making it ideal for use in breweries, dairies and other beverage applications.

The compact instrument offers high accuracy conductivity measurements in the range from 10 µS to 2000 mS/cm at an accuracy to within 0,5%. By utilising an inductive sensor, the unit eliminates the need for an electrode and avoids problems such as polarisation and soiling which can adversely affect reliability. It also ensures error-free measurements in media prone to sedimentation and provides complete galvanic isolation from the medium. Concentrations can be derived from the conductivity measurement, making it ideal for monitoring cleaning processes. The transmitter features integrated concentration tables for NaOH, H2SO4, H3PO4 and HNO3 as well as four user-definable concentration tables with remote switching between ranges.

The instrument features an integrated Pt100 temperature sensor capable of measuring the range from -10 to +150°C and providing temperature compensation for conductivity measurements.

The sensor is made from corrosion-resistant PEEK while the transmitter is made from stainless steel with an EPDM seal that provides IP67 protection. A self-monitoring facility with alarm function keeps tabs on the transmitter and sensor operation to ensure continuous reliability. Other features include a 4 to 20 mA output and a large two-line LCD capable of displaying both conductivity and temperature readings at a glance. The unit is available in two versions - with an integrated sensor and with a separate sensor/transmitter arrangement for remote installation. A wide range of options are also available including HART and Profibus communications and a range of process connections such as dairy, SMS, G 1 1/2, Clamp, Varivent and more.
