Phase comparators for up to 36 kV

April 2002 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

Surge Technology's Type PHV phase comparators offer safe and reliable operation while testing for in-phase conditions in three-phase electrical systems with rated voltages up to 36 kV/50 Hz.

Meeting the requirements of the international standards DIN VDE 0681 part 5 and IEC 61481, the phase comparators are suitable for use in indoor and outdoor systems, but not in wet conditions. Distinctive red rings on both test prods mark the end of the insulating sections in the direction of the operating head/indicator. This provides the user with a visible limit of contact with live and earthed system parts, as well as the depth of penetration allowed into electrical systems.

Their eccentric mounting ensures good visibility from various angles, and indication is provided for an out-of-phase condition when the angle between the two parts of the system to be tested is between 60° and 300°. A clear and sharp threshold is provided, and the indication will be at a constant frequency over the testing range.

The type PHV is insensitive to magnetic and electrical interference and physical contact with the electrical system is required before the phase comparator will provide indication. False indications are eliminated.

Test prods may be selected for the desired voltage, and the simple bayonet connection ensures easy coupling to the basic test unit. The devices are available with fixed fork or sharp tipped electrodes normally required for the penetration of insulating tape and putty.

Three versions are available. The compact PHV is ideal for use in factory built switchgear where bridging safety is essential as electrical clearances are limited. The 90° PHV is for use in switchgear that mounts vertically, allowing for phasing to be performed into the vertically mounted contacts. The extended version is for use in outdoor installations and in switchgear where larger span and separation is required.
